I took numerous photos of these books so I thought that I would paint a second version, it can be a valuable practice to explore a theme. I like to try out new techniques and I treat each painting like a science experiment: I will propose a hypothesis, test it out, and then observe what the results are. This often leads to new ideas and can bring about improvements over time, although sometimes the results are aweful. It’s best to learn from the failures and quickly move on to the next painting.

A few of the experiments that I have tried are:
• Painting without drawing first
• Make the preliminary drawing with a paintbrush instead of a pencil
• Using paint of various thicknesses: heavy impasto or thin washes
• Starting a painting off with a solid color
• Painting on a variety of supports: wood panels, paper, and canvas
• Working in a variety of sizes
• Painting an entire painting with one brush
