Late one afternoon I noticed the dramatic sunlight coming through a window and I was thinking about how I could utilize it in a painting. I was looking around the house for subject matter when I noticed the stack of books on a table and placed them on the living room floor. I wasn't interested in advertising any book in particular; I placed them so that the titles were face down and I didn't render any of the text.
The hardwood floors were enjoyable to paint, especially the sunlit areas and the reflections. Normally the one point perspective would be easy to accomplish with a ruler but the lines converge to a point located a few feet off of the painting, making it more difficult to set everything up. I could have guessed at it but it's faster to spend a little extra time with the drawing so that there are fewer corrections to be made in the painting stage. It's easier to correct a few pencil lines than it is to have to remix colors and paint over existing work.
