An Afternoon at Canandaigua Lake

Ink drawing of the boathouses at Canandaigua Lake
"An Afternoon at Canandaigua Lake"
Ink on watercolor paper
5”X7”

I have painted the historic boathouses on Canandaigua Lake before but I thought I would try working in black and white this time. I enjoy drawing in ink because it allows me to exaggerate the tonal ranges more than I can with color. I left the white of the paper for the plastic chairs and I used this as an effective counterpoint to the pure black shadows of the boathouses on the right.

There's a time lapse video of the entire drawing process below (click read more). You’ll notice that I start drawing directly and ink and don’t bother with sketching it out in pencil. I don’t worry about making mistakes because I just draw right over them. These corrections can make the drawing more interesting because of the additional lines but sometimes the the mistakes are covered up by the subsequent washes of ink.

This pen and ink drawing is of the seneca street overpass, heading into the Larkinville area of Buffalo NY. The Frank Lloyd Wright Larkin administration building was on the left side of this street. Unfortunately it's now a parking lot. Many of the buildings in the area are being renovated.

Below is the time lapse video of me working on this drawing. I worked on it in two sessions because the batteries in my camera died. Sometimes it's good to take a break from a drawing and look at it with "fresh eyes".

When I returned to it  I darkened the street and the sky, and I worked on the details in the railing.

The paper measures 5.5" x 8.5" so there's a small white border around the image.

I found these Tiger Orchids at the Erie County Botanical Gardens. They call them Tiger Orchids because, from certain angles, the center of the flowers look like a tigers head (and they're orange like a tiger).

A few weeks ago I cleaned out my studio and found some ink and a watercolor pad. Cleaning is sometimes like going shopping because I find supplies that I forgot that I had. So I've been making ink drawings on the watercolor paper for the fun of it. I like how the ink looks on this paper, it dries to a matte finish and the black areas a nice and dark, and the paper has a nice texture.

Green Pepper Halves

Black and white still life drawing of green pepper halves, drawn with Adobe Ideas.
"Green Pepper Halves" Chris Breier © 2012
This is the second pepper drawing that I've created using Adobe Ideas. The first was a full color green pepper drawing. I thought I would try to mimic a traditional pen and ink drawing using Adobe Ideas, and I've found that it works rather well.

THE DRAWING TECHNIQUE

I began this drawing by making a quick and  loose sketch of the basic shapes using a fine line. I wasn't worried about making mistakes because I knew that I would be working back into it with heavier cross hatching that would hide these finer lines.

Peanuts

peanuts, still life, adobe ideas, ipad drawing, line drawing, digital artDrawn with Adobe Ideas. The challenge of this drawing wasn't the shading, but finishing it without eating the subject matter! Fresh peanuts have a fantastic aroma!
